Super Size Me

Morgan Spurlock shows the effects of fast food on a person's body by going on an all McDonald's diet for thirty days. Morgan starts out as a healthy male with a body weight of 185 lbs. After eating McDonald's for only two weeks, he gains over five pounds. After twenty days he is advised to stop his diet because it may cause irreversible harm. Morgan Spurlock weighs over 200 lbs. and endangers his liver at the end of his McDonald's diet. Fast food is addicting and extremely unhealtlhy, especially when consumed on a regular basis. Many assume it to be a major cause of obesity. Fast food industries have a lot of influence in many places, like congress. Fast food manufacturers know that what's in their food is unhealthy, but they do not put money in researching ways to make their food more healthy even though they can. People don't choose to be healthy either. People choose the convenience and taste fast food instead of eating healthy, so it's not just the fault of the fast food industry. Fast food is a problem because of the obesity it causes, but there is little action being taken to reduce obesity and one of its major causes, fast food.

PETA advertisment

Remove Formatting from selection
PETA has yet again stirred up controversy with another one of its in your face advertisements promoting animal rights. The advertisement promotes vegetarianism by saying "Save the Whales, go vegetarian" and shows the back of a rotund woman wearing a bikini. Making fun of a person who is obese isn't the best way to deal with obesity. Also, using obesity as a way to promote vegetarianism just seems stupid. PETA shouldn't be that malicious toward people with weight problems just so they can get their point across. It's not really about PETA telling people that going vegetarian as a way of combating their obesity problem( even though it's not really meat eating that is a major reason for most cases of obesity), but it's that they promoted the message in a despicable way. PETA has always cared a lot more about animals and not about humans, which is kind of strange because in biology humans are part of the animals. PETA did not get the vegetarian point across very well in my opinion because too many people were angered by the billboard that showed the vegetarian promotion.

GenderBlog/Influence of Barbie

If Barbie was a real person she would be over seven feet tall. She would be underweight for her height, and she would be too top heavy to stand up straight. Apparently women feel pressured to look like Barbie which is nearly impossible. Barbie has supposedly caused a lot of pressure on young girls to look like her. I disagree. I don't think girls care that much about Barbie's measurements. I never really cared about Barbie's measurements, the only measurement of Barbie I ever thought of is that she eleven and a half inches tall. I don't think that the designers of Barbie meant to make her so disproportionate. I don't think anyone cared that Barbie should be built to scale of a real person, and I don't think that it really matters that she is so disproportionate. People say that Barbie pressures girls into trying to be something that they can't, but I think that girls care more about Barbie's hair than her body.

I agree but to a certain extent Mcdonald is not trying to find a healthy option they dont care. All there trying to do is serve food thats good and have a good taste not trying to help their consumers lose wieght. Mc donalds pride themselve on being fast and cheap, most of the times vegatable arent cheap and hard to make good in a mass production. I dont think it is Mc donald responsibility to make food healthy but to put in their consumers laps just how many calories. This society is moving to fast and we have a problem slowing down for just a minute to cook dinner. Kids shouldnt make Mc donalds or even fast food their primary source of food.
I also find in certain communitied Fast food is all over the place it isnt neccessary to have all those fast food restuaurants. In the inner city they should have restrictions on having so many fast food restuarants they lore in children to eat unhealthy things putting pressure on them. Thats why I move to take away so many fast food restuarants.

Advertising Blog

Where ever you go, in today’s society we are swamped with ads. Every day we are faced with thousands of ads. It’s become a part of our daily lives and we are undoubtedly influenced by them. They push us to try their new fish sandwich, or what the latest fall fashion is, or even what toilet tissue is more “productive/efficient”. Of course these are there jobs, and they also have families to provide for and live their lives, but it is also conditioning our society to life by what the media says is “right” or the “best”. Did those advertising companies ever think about those families who can’t afford to eat out, while their mouths are drooling for the mouth watering Olive Garden commercial. Or that little boy, whose the only boy on his block without the latest model of the x-Box 360, because his can’t manage to pay for it. These give those individuals, who are just as equal and have just as many rights, the belief that they are someway missing out. So, the one problem that I could come up in faulting the advertising companies is their tactics. Which are, that they pressure people to strive for what they cannot have. But on the other hand, that’s just a part of our day by day lives and something that we have to deal with.

Why does beauty mean pain.

I must say this isnt all my idea. But talking with a fellow classmate made sit down and think why is beauty for women also means hours of pain. I mean think about it. Society tells women that we must wear heels to show our feminity when we are young women. While women are claking around with there heels we are all just preparing ourselves for future orthapedic surgery. ( shaking my head) Heels are getting higher and higher these day and I really believe that we are wearing these heels because Men love us in them and they are " sexy" so of course we wear them to please society and the expectations in our looks to be deem womenly enough. I mean isnt it enough that we wear those wrecthed contraptions called bras with the wires that have been linked to higher cause of breast cancer. No! thats not enough we also must shave every hair that is left on our body or even if its left it must be plucked and shaped so that its is perfectly neat. Do men go under these painful task daily or even weekly to maintain? I think not ! They just simply shower a quick shave and are out the door while women spend over a billion dollars to follow this image of what society feels is beautiful and what women should be doing. So beside plucking, feet suffering from deformation and contraptions we call bras what else do we have rough? I thought that was enough but I guess everyday society is coming out with new ways to harm us from laser removal to tanning booths. PLEASE O PLEASE . tell me when enough is enough and society can just take women for what they really are inside and out.

thank you.

Gender Blog

Why can’t little Timmy wish for a pretend mommy (why not daddy) and me kitchen set? Or why can’t little Sally wish for a pretend daddy (why not mommy) and me outside grilling set? Well, the answer to those questions is because of the “unspoken rules” society puts on us. Tries to get us to believe that only females a suppose to be in the kitchen stuffing the turkey, with a timer in hand, and males are suppose to be in the backyard flipping a hamburger, with an ice cold beer in hand. This ridiculous stereotype is one that we are faced with everyday. And I believe that as a citizen, in a society where we are suppose to act, look, and feel a certain way, it is our responsibility to stand up and protest. Protest that little Timmy will be just fine if he learns the proper way to season a turkey or if little Sally learns the different techniques in flipping a steak. I believe that the advertising companies are trying to condition our young children into a “perfect American”, when in actuality they are tearing a generation down in feeling comfortable and confident in oneself. To stand up and do what they please, because if a person doesn’t stand for something, he or she will fall for anything.

YoPlait Commercial.

While watching the womens network also know as Lifetime For Women an interesting commecial came on. The Yoplait commercial. This commercial shows at a glance what is wrong with our society and the pressure that women have for weight. The Yoplait yogurt commecial is a women and she takes all her clothes to a seamstress to be taken in because after eating yogurt she has now lost enough weight to get her clothes taking in. This commercial shows how women are now obsessing over the pressure to be a size six. Now sitting there I thought to myself why couldnt they just simply advertise being a healthy snack. No they had to mention and focus on the fact women lose weight eating Yoplait. It is also intersting how this commerical comes on specific networks that they know women are watching. Chances are if your watching tv all the time and arent getting any exercise that the only weight you will be losing is NONE!. So I think this commerical shows how society is forcing women to believe they need to lose weight and advertising and products are playing on that fact. Although a yoplait yogurt might be a healthier option Idont think it should be the main focus of almost ever women product.

it starts with pink and blue birthday cards. Toy trucks for him and Barbie dolls for her. Prepackaged ideals judging children based on gender. And it doesn't stop there. I have no idea where this stero type has come from but it has been one of the BIGGEST "here to stay" type of stereo type. I personally have no problem with the color pink:) but do i like it because that's all society would approve me to have-along with other things- as a girl? Did i like the toys in my "girl" happy meal, or would i have been HAPPIER with the toys in the "boy" happy meal? i will never know. This stero type lays so low but effects society in high ranks, girls could grow into something totally different if all of this "girly" pressure wasn't pushed on us...in the days before us, women were obligated to wear dresses, then they felt obligate to be sexy with the hair etc, and it just grew from there.
I personally love to get up in the morning, do my hair, get dressed in a cute outfit with heels :) but it's because i just love fashion!..and some girls don't like getting cutesy in the morning. but who said sweat pants and a t shirt wasn't cutsey??- society..ugh.
Over all if you want to be you be you..not what society was trying to make you from birth with the pink and blue blankets.

Gender Research..

I researched for a gender difference article on Google, i ran across one that was quite interesting!Gender Differences.Excerpted from "Why Gender Matters: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know about the Emerging Science of Sex Differences"
By Leonard Sax, M.D., Ph.D.
This article really touched the question are boys and girls really that different to begin with?
he describes an experiment that leads parents through the world of gender differences by explaining the biologically different ways in which children think, feel, and act. He addresses issues, including discipline, learning, risk taking, aggression, sex, and drugs, and shows how boys and girls react in predictable ways to different situations. He connects these skits with saying For example, SOME girls are born with more sensitive hearing than boys, or SOME boys might have more strength and those differences that have turned into streo types, increase as kids grow up and teachers, parents and society have a HUGE impact. These impacts press these kids at a young age to be a certain way because it's the "right" way to be, who said this?? it's a streotype that has grown for too long and damaging the person people COULD'VE been. If these impacts were eliminated, IMAGINE the stress relif! with relationships-communication,demands men give, or being promiscuis being "cool"-, with education-the idea of girls having to be like barbie to be cool would be eliminated- and with family=D - you can open up, come out of the closet more easily, and not shunned upon by your family if your different than others(which could eliminate sucides and drug use).
In the beggining of the cycle of life a girl is a girl and a boy is a boy, but these three impact are blinding.
Do you agree? OR Disagree and why?

Exploitation of Women in Music.

Lately I have been watching music videos in most all genres of music and I have notice that women are exploited in some type of way. For example we can look at the MTV top music video like " The Breakup" By Mario. In his video he has a women half dressed and is shown as a sex symbol. This imaginary women is shown as something young girls are supposed to be which is tall slender and nice butt and beautiful long hair. I would prefer for once they show a girl that actually has imperfections so that younger girls dont turn to videos to imulate what they are supposed to look like when they grow up. Women in the industy do it just as much as males. Fergie videos show everything in her music videos just as society expects of her. Lady GaGa a new artist does the same as well revealing herself. Beyonce is known for her body almost every video she has had lately has shown everything. So I ask myself what is the purpose do women really have to show themselves for records to sell or videos to have heavy rotation. I mean Beyonce has been in the industry for over 10 years why does she feel she still have to show herself. After so many years you would think your music would be able to stand on its own. Im waiting for the day when Men in the industry can have a music video without the exploitation of women and their bodies. Although the girls that dance in them make the choice to show themself I didnt know women as a whole made the choice to exploit our bodies and be forever known as a sex symbol.

MATH IS HARD SAID BARBIE..

"Can we please retire the claim that boy brains are hard wired for maths and girls brain are not?!"...This writing definitley shows how society plays a role in decieving the public that girls are not as smart as boys. I Agree with this piece completely.
This article shows many statistics of how girls have concored plenty more than what the sexist govenment wants to put light on. "countries whose girls lag behind boys tend to see math for nreds only, which drives away many american girls (because they care more about social status)"
I totally agree and loved this article and i hope it reached out.
Do you think these statements are true?
We as girls let society control our potential in studies?...
&Do you think it's too late to change these statements?

Malibu Barbie.

In class today we watched the Simpson's about Malibu Barbie and how Lisa disagreed with how women are portrayed in Malibu Barbie. When Lisa and he family went to the Toy store all the little girls were knocking over the shelves to get the new Barbie that just came out. Lisa joining in the crowd with all the other little girls bought her Malibu Stacey Doll. The doll is perfect all around perfect hair, nice clothes that are in the color of pink, and high heel shoes. While playing with the doll Lisa is awaiting to hear what Stacey has to to say about things. Pulling the dolls string back she says "Lets buy makeup to look pretty for boys" " Or boys are smarter hehehehhe". This goes against everything the character lisa believes in so she is determined to make a stance. Dolls like that should definetly be taken off the shelves, that are belittling the minds of women. I think that we should take a deeper look at what the toys are trying to tell our children and is that really the image we want to show our girls. Overall this show made me take a closer look at how America forces our kids to supply to the norm of what girls and boy should act like and dress like with really no originality.

Mean Girls.

Recently we watched the Movie "Mean Girls". I enjoyed that movie very much, because for many high school kids that is their reality. Fortunately Groves High School divisions aren't as harsh and rude as the school in the movie. Today my group talked and compared that school lunch divisions to our school. In the Mean Girls they had a table to for the jocks, Asian girls, sexually active band members, the girls who eat their emotions, the girls who eat nothing, and the Plastics (Popular Girls). The first day of school for Cady was a nightmare because with all the cliques in the lunch room she wasn't able to find not one seat in the entire lunchroom forcing her to eat her lunch in the bathroom. Although the divisions are not as cruel and rude to new students there still is a division. You may find in the lunch room the division is normally between the Freshman and Sophmore students because those are the students that generally stay on campus to eat their lunch. In our lunchroom we have a table for the white girls who tend to be smart and dress nice. Near them sit the black girls with their clique and next to them is a lonely table of maybe two or three boys who maybe considered nerds or just not socially inclined as far as appearance. Across the commons are the kids that maybe considered goths or weird, they tend to wear black and discuss different topics then the girls across the commons may be discussing. Even though our lunchroom is separated I feel like if you wanted to sit with someone and they recognize you were knew to the school groves students would allow you to sit with them until you find your group of friends. Groves is a nice place with nice kids that don't always judge you on how you look or where you come from, but as society has taught us there will always be divisions.
